20 Years of Design
20 Years of Design
Career
This month marks 20 years since I landed my first design job. It's been quite a journey, echoing that of many fellow designers.

I started at a printing company, tasked with typesetting pages for publications. With basic skills, interviews were simple back then, just a chat and a short Microsoft Word test. Looking back, entering the industry felt much easier compared to now.
After a couple of months, I picked up creative work as I rapidly learned design programs like the infamous CorelDraw. My early passion and ability to skill up fast enabled me to transition into a graphic designer role.
Since then my career has been full of pivots, from print design to web, UI development and finally UX design. I’ve worn many hats as an employee, employer, startup founder, freelancer and contractor before settling in fintech. Coming full circle as I have an economics degree, not just design or tech credentials as some may assume.
I was privileged to join when design felt like the digital Wild West: barriers to entry were so low. In context, it took my dad years to believe "playing on computers" could be credible work.
Now here I am, 20 years in! It’s surreal being halfway through my career, with many years still ahead. Our industry keeps advancing rapidly: who knows how many jobs will change with AI systems coming. But I’m confident that together, designers will adapt like we always have.
Mostly, I’m grateful for the mentors, colleagues and loved ones who made this journey possible with guidance and support. Thank you for empowering me through the twists and turns. Here’s to 20 more years pursuing meaningful and fun work 🥂!
